John Hamilton

John Hamilton

Treasurer

I’ve lived in Haddington from Birth (the Vert was closed for new intakes, so actually born at the Western). I’ve been on the Community Council since around 2010 as the Community is all about what you put into it and take out it – it’s a two way involvement. My speciality is running the Lost Haddington Facebook pages – lots of old photos of all things Haddington!

Stuart PE-Win

Stuart PE-Win

HCTRA Rep

Stuart feels very proud to have been elected to the Community Council in 2021 and hopes to help make the town a better place to live, work and visit. Although he has lived in many countries over the years such as Italy, Australia and Malaysia, he really fell in love with Haddington and its history, so enjoys talking and meeting with community groups and researching about the town and East Lothian.  While doing genealogical research, he was surprised to learn he has family from Haddington dating as far back as 1602.

Stuart is a trustee of East Lothian Play Association which promotes the benefits and value of play for children and young people.  Stuart is also an active member of Mensa and was a special interest secretary for several groups.  Being dyslexic and dyspraxic, schooling was hard, but as a mature student he eventually graduated with a BSc(hons), an MA and was working on his MPhil before he gave that up to become a full time carer. He is a volunteer Mental Health First aider at work and volunteers for the Observation Social Research Organisation at the University of Sussex.  Stuart is a great believer in lifelong learning and development.  He was also pleased to have been able to collaboratively develop ideas with Our Community Kitchen and other groups.

He is especially passionate about the local Tenants and Residents Association where he has worked as chair for Haddington Central since 2019.  In 2021 he was awarded an ‘Individual Covid Champion’ Sparkle Award for his commitment to community work and training during the Pandemic.  He is particularly interested in town planning, community engagement and project management.  Stuart is also a member of the Scottish Rural Action, a grassroots democratic assembly, as well as the H.P.Lovecraft historical society and the handwritten letter appreciation society.  He also helps the magic pixies who help look after the Haddington Wishing Tree in Nelson park.

Stuarts feels its important to improve inclusivity, diversity and engagement with other stakeholders and organizations such as Planning Democracy so as to better help represent, develop and improve peoples experiences in Haddington.
